‘Threads of Equality’:A tapestry celebrating votes for women

Let’s be honest, the story of women getting the vote is an epic one. There were daring campaigns, charismatic leaders – and even ju jitsu training sessions. Women risked it all in the name of political equality.

In days gone by, legendary tales were told through thread and stitch. The Battle of Hastings has the Bayeux Tapestry: we thought that women’s fight for the vote deserved something of its own.

‘Threads of Equality’ is our answer.

What is ‘Threads of Equality’?

We’re stitching a 15-metre tapestry that chronicles the epic tale of women winning the right to vote on equal terms as men.

It took many voices to bring about women’s suffrage, and it’ll take many hands to stitch ‘Threads of Equality’. Community groups, crafting workshops, and schools are coming together across the whole of the UK to create this momentous artwork.

It’ll be ready in time for the 100-year celebrations in 2028 of women achieving equal voting rights.

Can I get involved?

Yes please!

We’re raising money to cover the cost of materials, fees for an artist to facilitate the project, and the expenses associated with coordinating stitching groups nationwide.

We’re incredibly grateful for your individual donations, and we’re also looking for businesses interested in sponsoring the project.

If you can’t donate, you can still support us by sharing this page and spreading the word.

Can you help stitch women back into the political story?

Are you nifty with a needle – or keen to learn? We’d love to hear from anyone interested in creating part of the tapestry and becoming one of our stitching heroes. There may be a stitching group near you already, or we can help you to organise something of your own.

We’ll be commissioning an artist to facilitate the project, and applications are now open.

What’s the aim of ‘Threads of Equality’?

The ‘Threads of Equality’ tapestry is part of our wider celebrations to honour the women who fought for the vote in the UK. This is all in the lead up to the centenary of the 1928 Equal Franchise Act, in which women won the vote on the same terms as men.

Once finished, the artwork will be toured around the country in different venues, reaching as many communities as possible.

It’s an opportunity to celebrate the selfless actions of suffragists and suffragettes, to educate people about a campaign that lasted almost 100 years, and to inspire future generations to get interested and active in equality and democracy.
